Police say a Plainview man has been arrested for arson following a fire that occurred on Monday.
According to detectives, officers responded to an Eileen Avenue residence for reports of a fire on Monday.
The Bethpage Fire Department responded with the assistance of several neighboring fire departments and extinguished the flames.
Upon investigation, it was determined that Jahan Kia, 40, a tenant of the residence, was responsible for starting a fire on the basement stairwell and was placed in custody.
There were no residents inside, but two dogs and one cat were found deceased inside the home due to the fire.
Nassau County fire marshals and Nassau Police Arson/Bomb Squad responded to the scene.
Two fire fighters suffered injuries as a result of the fire and were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and burns to the hands. No further injuries were reported.
Ariana Belfort gathered what she could from the home she shared with her three children.
She says the home had three units and says Kia was the only one there when the fire started.
"Everything that we all own, on the first floor on the second floor, is completely gone. Everything I have. My dogs were killed. He killed his own cat," she said. "He lit the basement on fire, and it engulfed the whole house.”
Scott Nordin says he is the father of the woman who owns the home on Eileen Avenue.
He says Kia lived in the basement unit for just over a year.
"We checked his references, everything was done. There's no way,” he said. “We only knew about a problem yesterday."
Kia was released from police custody following his arraignment Tuesday afternoon.
He was released with an ankle monitor and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
