Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) President Zulma Toro says she received an envelope Friday that contained a suspicious substance inside.
In an email sent to the university community, Toro said the envelope was addressed to her but did not have a return address.
Once Toro opened the envelope, an unknown substance was released.
Connecticut State Police say around 7:30 p.m., officers responded to Toro's home in Burlington. Uconn Hazmat, the Department of Energy and Environment Protection and the fire department also responded.
An on-site assessment showed Toro did not require medical attention.
Connecticut State Police are investigating the incident.
Toro said the team at CCSU are also working with local, state and federal agencies regarding the incident.
"In the meantime, what I would like to say is thank you, to the public safety personnel and staff at Central who supported me. Thank you to the first responders who handled a frightening situation with professionalism and care. Thank you to all the members of the Central family, CSCU team, Board of Regents and the community who have reached out by phone and email, to send messages of encouragement. While I can't control everything that comes my way, I can control how I respond to them," Toro said in a statement.
