A security guard who accidentally fired his service weapon inside a Paramus elementary school bathroom has been placed on leave, school officials have confirmed.
In a letter sent home to families, Superintendent of Schools Sean Adams said the incident occurred on May 16 at Midland Elementary School.
"This afternoon, while behind closed doors in a single-use, staff-only bathroom, a school security guard accidentally discharged his service weapon," Adams said in the letter, adding that no one, including the guard, was injured.
Following the incident, Paramus police responded to the school to begin an investigation. Adams says the district is "cooperating fully" with law enforcement and officials were grateful for the quick response by officers.
The superintendent also said counselors available for any students who need those services.
"We understand that students and staff may feel anxious or have questions and our school counselors and support staff are available to speak to anyone who needs support," Adams said.
The incident and any additional disciplinary action will be determined by the Board of Education and the superintendent said he will update the community "as the investigation permits."
