A state lawmaker is urging New York's governor to recommend Stewart International Airport as the future home of the proposed U.S. Space Academy.
State Sen. James Skoufis said Stewart should be considered after NASA invited states to submit proposals to host the academy, which was announced by the Trump administration in August.
Skoufis said Stewart International Airport offers several advantages, including one of the country's longest runways, land available for development and existing aerospace and military resources in Orange County.
"We have one of the longest runways in the country. One of the only runways that is long enough and certified to land a space shuttle. And more importantly, we have all this undeveloped land," Skoufis said.
The senator also pointed to the airport's connection to West Point and its shared facilities with the Stewart Air National Guard Base as reasons it would be a strong candidate.
