A wildfire impacting parts of Warren County near Hackettstown and Independence Township has burned at least 100 acres of land, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
Officials say that the fire, which started around 12:30 p.m. Friday near Route 46, is now 75% contained as of 8 p.m. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Route 46 and some surrounding roadways were temporarily closed for a time but have since reopened.
Officials say that the fire destroyed one building and damaged another. One structure is under threat from the fire – down from 25 structures. No evacuation orders have been issued.
The fire caused a lot of smoke that blanketed the area for miles.
"I smelled fire and there was smoke coming out of the marsh across the street,” says Peter Giller, owner of Blackstones Grill.
Giller’s restaurant is located along Route 46. He says he was working at the time.
“You couldn't even see across the street,” Giller said regarding the smoke.
He says thankfully, his business didn't have to close.
"They were thinking about it, but they had a truck posted out back in case it caught on fire, but I was wetting down the roof with a hose all day."
Officials say that they hope that the rain expected this weekend will help extinguish the fire.
“We’ll be back in the morning first light, kind of seeing what's out there, what we need to work on,” says Eric Weber, assistant forest fire warden for the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. “And then between what we find in the morning and hopefully the weather moving in tomorrow, hopefully this thing is wrapped up by tomorrow, but we'll see."
Fire officials say that crews have been busy lately with wildfires in Cumberland and Ocean counties. Those fires have consumed more than 16,000 acres of land combined.
No injuries were reported in the Warren County fire. Fire officials are urging everyone to stay away from the area and to refrain from flying drones near the fire.
