The historic Cranford Theater remained closed on Thursday after a partial ceiling collapse on Wednesday night.
The Cranford Theater is known as a local landmark. Now, those looking forward to special events at the theater will have to wait until a ceiling in one of the showrooms is fixed.
"As far as we know right now, there were no structural issues with the building. It was a drop ceiling that fell and fortunately, nobody was there,” said Cranford Mayor Terrence Curran.
The Cranford Township Committee shared a statement following the collapse.
"Events scheduled at the theater in the coming days will be canceled or postponed and new dates will be announced,” the statement read. "The Cranford movie theater is such an important part of our community, the downtown and Cranford's history. We look forward to celebrating the reopening."
"We just hope that they're able to repair it and get up and running as quick as possible because we'll miss them," said Cranford resident Kate Rappa.
Curran says now the town’s focus is on helping the owner to rebuild.
"We can rebuild the theater, and we can make sure the business stays alive, which is really important to Cranford. But thankfully, nobody was injured,” he said.
Township officials say the Downtown Management Corps will help the theater's owner as she navigates the weeks ahead to rebuild and reopen.
