Officials have identified two women killed on Monday when their vehicle was swept away in flash flooding in Plainfield.
The women were identified as Lubia Estevez and Forest Whitlock. Both women were in their early 60s, according to officials.
They say the women were driving along Stelle Avenue when they made a turn and ended up in a ditch and were pulled into the fast-moving waters of Cedar Brook under the bridge.
“Emergency personnel responded quickly, but tragically, both individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene,” officials wrote in a statement.
Monday’s storm caused several inches of rain to fall in a short amount of time, leading to flash flooding and damage around central New Jersey.
Plainfield officials say that Monday’s deaths occurred just under two weeks after a July 3 storm claimed the lives of two other people in the city.“All of Plainfield grieves this latest loss,” Mayor Adrian O. Mapp wrote in a statement.
“To lose four residents in such a short span of time is unimaginable. We mourn with the families, and we remain committed to doing all we can to strengthen our emergency response systems and protect our residents from future harm.”
Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency on Monday due to the storm. He toured several flood-damaged locations on Tuesday.
