Parents and students are on alert this morning after a shooting near a Brownsville school sent a teenager running inside for help.
Police say a 17-year-old boy was shot in the ankle around 10:30 a.m. Monday near 333 Thomas S. Boyland Street. After being wounded, the teen ran into the New Achievement First Elementary School on Bergen Street. He was later taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
The shooter ran off, and no arrests have been made. Police have not yet released a description of the suspect.
While crime stats show only one other shooting has been reported in this area so far this year, neighbors say this latest incident is unsettling.
Police were stationed outside the school for much of the day Monday, but by Tuesday morning, there were no visible officers. It remains unclear if any additional safety measures will be put in place.
News 12 has reached out to the school for comment on whether security changes are planned. This is a developing story stay with News 12 for updates.
