It will soon be more affordable for some college students to take mass transit to classes in New York City. The New York City Council and CUNY announced the launch of a new transit affordability program. The program will provide 700 students with free, unlimited OMNY cards. New York City secured $700,000 to pay for the cards in its 2027 budget. City officials offered the following details about which students are eligible: "These OMNY cards will be for students who need it the most. So those that are eligible for Pell grants, enrolled full-time and not receiving the support through other programs," said NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin. City officials say 90% of CUNY students use public transportation to get to their classes, and the program will help make their commute more affordable.
