Bus riders in New Jersey are getting free Wi-Fi. It’s one of the technology upgrades New Jersey Transit revealed on Thursday. The agency says that by the end of 2026, 83% of buses will offer the service. Currently, 1,500 buses are providing the free service.

Buses offering free Wi-Fi are being outfitted with two modems to ensure the signal doesn’t drop while riders are travelling.

In addition, New Jersey Transit is starting to use digital bus stop signs to update commuters waiting outside for a ride. NJ Transit also has an upgraded mobile app, with 86% accuracy when it comes to bus arrivals.

“Before June of this year, we were around 74% accuracy in making sure we will have real-time data of bus arrivals," said New Jersey Transit President Kris Kolluri.

At what is arguably the busiest bus stop in the state, Broad Street and Market in Newark, we asked bus riders if they'd like the free Wi-Fi.

“Yes, it would. Yes, it would. Most of the time people don’t really have service. Everybody is using city Wi-Fi," said Winston Jackson, who travels from East Orange to Newark to get to work.

The Wi-Fi service is being paid for with $21 million in federal grant money.

With these upgrades in technology, New Jersey Transit is fulfilling a promise from Gov. Mikie Sherrill to improve customer service for those who use mass transit to get around New Jersey.
