New Jersey Transit officials and leaders with the engineers union met in Washington, D.C. on Monday for contract negotiations.

NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen were called to Washington by the National Mediation Board to work out a deal before a May 16 strike deadline.

Details about Monday’s meeting were limited.

"We found the discussion to be constructive and look forward to continuing negotiations in good faith,” NJ Transit officials wrote in a statement. “To respect the collective bargaining process, we will not be sharing any additional details publicly at this time."

B.L.E.T. officials confirmed that a meeting took place, but declined to comment further.

The union for the engineers is calling for a higher salary for its members. A deadline to make a deal is midnight on May 16.

NJ Transit has announced various contingency plans in the event a deal cannot be reached by the deadline.
