NJ Transit ticket prices have increased for the first time in nine years. Beginning today, a 15% fare increase kicks in for NJ Transit rail and bus riders.
NJ Transit says ridership has been down since the pandemic, leading to a more than $100 million budget shortfall. The fare hike comes on the heels of a disastrous month of rail service with repeated delays. The last month featured nine delays or suspensions of service into and out of New York Penn.
Some examples of increases include:
  • One-way fare to go from Middletown to New York City is rising from $15.25 to $17.50.
  • A bus ride from Jersey City to the Port Authority Bus Terminal will rise 50 cents one way to $4.
This isn't the end for rate hikes, there will also be a 3% annual rate increases coming each year on July 1.
