News twelve's Catarina Beal has more from West. How is it going out there? Oh, Rachel. It's a beautiful day here. We're here at Rockland. Both right now or another news backpack give away is under way you can see behind me, kids are lining up at the news. 1210 ging some drawing back and some backpacks and getting ready to get some snacks going over here. We have the time with some more supply, some goodies like sunglasses, chapstick and we have multiple other organizations throughout Rockland County that are setting up tents with supplies from our sponsors, stop and shop. Staples, go and house Seltzer Water. Now today wasn't just for the kids. Teachers also had a very special surprise. We're also here to present a check to the teachers here behind me, a check for $30,000 for these special education teachers to use in their classrooms. I now, Optimum presented Rock and both with a $30,000 check. It's through the company's partnership with National Education Nonprofit donors choose 200 special education teachers throughout the county will receive a $150 gift card to purchase materials and resources based on their students needs. Back to school just around the corner and students across our region need the supplies that'll set them up for success. The News 12 is happy to be helping with that at another great backpack giveaway event. This time in Rockland County, our Lisa Salvadori is over at Rockland Boss in West Nyack. She's talking to some folks that helped make this possible. She herself getting excited for the kids that will soon come. So excited the sun is that we are just a few hours away from this big event and of course you need the school supplies. So we've got them for you and of course free backpacks and snacks. But in addition to that, you also need to know about some services here in Rockland County from pediatric, physical and occupational therapy, Alex or is here joining us this morning to talk exactly about what your organization does for the local community. Good morning. My name is Alex Orloff from pediatric, physical and occupational therapy. I'm here to talk about back to school. We are here to support your Children and getting back to school. The backpack is actually not as easy as it looks first. Your child needs to be able to open and close the backpack and that's something that you really help with, but you're helping babies all the way up to people with more serious developmental disabilities. So talk about what you're doing now as we get ready to go back to school for the local families that you serve. So we are here. I'm working on helping Children hold a pencil to be able to write letters to form their names. I'm helping Children cut with scissors, cut shapes from paper to be able to make a we work on helping kids open and closed backpacks, take things out of their backpack, like their lunch box, something so simple that you may not even think about might be really challenging for these kids. Many of our Children have difficulty opening packages so they're sitting down at lunch and they can't open their water bottle or their fruit snacks. So we're here to support all of the Children here in Rockland County to get back to school and be successful and master those skills and have a successful school year. All right, Alex. We have a backpack giveaway event today in Rockland County and Lisa Salvadori is over at Rockland Bossie's in West Nyack. Getting set up, getting excited. We can't wait. Yes. And we are here in Safety City. This is something new for Rock and this is where we are going to be giving out hundreds of free backpacks and school supplies in just a few hours. Of course, with the school supplies and a new school year comes a concern about safety. So joining me now is from the Rockland County Department of Health. Thank you so much for being with us today. Talk to us about those important safety pieces of information that families know specifically when it comes to fire safety. Sure. So now that we're focusing on back to school, kids are getting back to school, we want to focus on home safety, getting back to home safety and one of the important things that we focus on fire safety. So we want to make sure that we have working smoke alarms on every level of the home making sure that they're up to date, making sure that, um, they're no more than 10 years old. Uh, and so that's something important to focus on pertaining to the fire safety. We want to make sure that we have carbon monoxide alarms as well for the well being and the safety of the family and Children in the home. And the Rockland County Health Department does provide a very special service when it comes to people who may not be able to afford to get these kind of devices in their home. Talk a little bit more about that. Sure. So the Rockland County Department of Health offer healthy neighborhoods program whenever they sign for our program, which we're going to be here at the back to school backpack giveaway. So you'll be able to sign up for a free smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm. We do a quick assessment and we visit the home, make sure that everything is working and up to date and we want to show you what you would be signing up for. So these are the items that you would be getting for free. How do people qualify? Yes. So as long as you're a Rockland County resident, you can sign up for the program. We have the 10 year no battery needed uh smoke alarm as well. So there's no need to worry about replacing your alarm, getting up on a ladder and changing that out, we will take care of that. For you. We also have the carbon monoxide alarm with the sealed battery inside and a hearing impaired smoke alarm for anyone in the home that may have a hearing impairment. We provide that as well. Such important pieces of equipment to have in your home. Thank you so much, William. Well, it was a party here at the refuge of church here and take a look at this line wrapped around the church parking lot. As people from all over Westchester and the Hudson Valley come together to grab good ahead of the new school year. Yankee and Baseball Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera joined News 12 and are co sponsors in all the fun. As one of the founders of Refuge of Hope Church Rivera was proud to host today's event. I'm excited that seeing the family see that that's what I love for us to give back to the community. Uh Second to none from preschoolers to high schoolers and all ages in between students and parents lined up to prepare for another school year. It tells us that the community wants to allow us to have more and to allow us to not have to have such hard times. Community organizations throughout the region pitched in to help out in the fun from supplies to snacks, to safety gear. Students received a wide variety of free goodies to put inside each of their bags. We enjoy it with the kids and we're happy with the things they bring to her. And as the school year approaches, Rivera has one message to students. Education is the most important thing there is for us. Ok. And there's going to be a lot of back to school talk over the coming weeks and it's going to start right now. Once again, we are getting students ready, setting them up for success, helping out at a backpack giveaway in New Rochelle today and thrilled to be doing so, Lisa Salvadori has a very special guest for us this morning, Lisa. Very special. Indeed. A man that needs no introduction. We are talking about former Yankee Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera. Thank you so much for being with us today and partnering with us for this special backpack event, Lisa. No, thank you for being here and thank you for having me. All right. So let's talk about first this church. Take me back to when you first saw it and how you got it from where it was 10 years ago to where it is today. Well, I mean, when I came here, we were looking for a church, our congregation was in need of church. So a friend of mine called Joe Fin, which I love, the family brought me to this church and it was in a bad shape. But the community city hall gave us for a dollar, but we had to raise over $5 million to renovate the whole entire because there was a hole in the roof. At one point, there was a hole in that corner of the church. So the whole thing was a mess, but that is good. And we received the church and we were grateful. So a lot of people not only gather to help but donate and that's the most important thing for people. I mean, grateful to donate and help us JBL gave us the whole sound system. It's amazing. It is amazing and it's so gorgeous inside as well. Your faith is so important to you, not just in life, but during your legendary baseball career, talk to me about how it has guided you over these years. Oh my face, Lisa, my face is everything about this. You know, I, I come from Panama, a small town called Puerto Cami to here, the United States of America, come here to New York and without faith, it's impossible to do it. So my faith is about, you know, being, being church, being in life, you know, all about all those things because it is impossible to talk about providing. We want you to provide a little advice for kids going back to school. What would you tell them? Maybe if they're a little nervous or they're starting a sport for the first time. We got to get some advice from you on this advice to the Children. Now, going back to school and the youngsters, I mean, first of all, you're going back to school, enjoy, you know, you have to be happy, going back to school, you're learning new things, you know, be kind to others to each other and just respect each other. But just when it comes to play, that was the most, the most important class for me. Just going gym, going out and play. Oh my God. You know, so boys now just being boys and girls just play, enjoy school. Ok. And a lot of fans are enjoying the Yankees right now. I will get a lot of angry e mails if I don't ask about what you think about the Yankees this year. Well, as you saying, the Yankees are doing amazing, you know, I mean, they're fighting back and forth with Baltimore Baltimore Orioles to be in first place and I put in my wish and my money. Yes, of course. You do. You do. All right now, something else that is very special. Mariano is going to be with us when we give away these free backpacks today. And we also are going to have you do a special toss to weather because we're getting a great day. So you can say radic, take it away, take it away. All right.

A newer shell today we're very excited about it. Tell Lisa, excuse me, used to say that Lisa Salvadori, my partner in crime out there already. She is getting ready and has some company, Lisa, how we look. We are looking great, Tara, we are helping local families get strapped in for a great new school year with a big backpack giveaway. Just take a look at some of the loot that you can get your hands on. We've got everything from pencils to rulers to back that will get you off on the right foot for a new school year. And a lot of local organizations are going to be with us here today that does include the new Rochelle Police Department right now. We want to say good morning to Officer Lewis. Thank you so much for being with us this morning. Getting up very, very early, we appreciate it. I'm really happy to be here. You know, it's a good thing for the kids and stuff, especially the kids that might need supplies. Ok. So let's talk about your specific unit and how the new Rochelle Police Department is so instrumental in helping with this new transition from summer to back to school. So I'm part of the police and community together unit. Our main role is we're designated a specific area of near Rochelle. We get to meet the people from the community, school officials, church groups and youth organizations. And we ourselves also participated in events with them during the school year, such as like such a truck where we bring our cars and explain to the kids a little bit about our job and what we do. And speaking of the church, that's where we are right now at Refuge of Hope in New Rochelle. And this is a community where kids either walk to school, they might be bussed to school or they ride their bikes. So talk about some important safety measures that parents need to put in place now so that kids have a good safe back to school. So if your kid is going to walk to school, just make sure to practice in the next following weeks, you know, them look both ways when they cross the street and look for the upcoming traffic to make sure that they're safe. If they ride their bikes, make sure that they wear a helmet no matter how long or short the ride is. And if they ride the bus, make sure that they wait on the curve until the bus comes to a complete stop. Make sure that your kid knows that they need to see the drivers and make sure the driver also sees them when they get back into the bus and the drivers actually stop as well for that stop arm as well. It's going to be a fantastic day and we are just a few hours away from our big backpack giveaway where we are given out, not just these backpacks but all of the stuff you see right here. All thanks to some of our many partners here. Of course, Optimum Warner Brothers, Discovery Stop and Shop staples go and how and we've also partnered with the local community as well because that's what makes us as local as local news gets us. Now is Officer from the New Orel Police Department. You're going to be giving away some free stuff as well. Talk to us a little bit about the loot that you have. So we're giving out some of the essentials which include like dry race markers, glue, glue sticks, pencils and they're sharpened, so they're sharpened, they're sharpened and they're ready to go. What do you think it means for this local community to have partners like you and us come and be in the community? I feel that they definitely are appreciative, you know, for some people, it might be a tough time to get all these supplies and we're more than happy to help. Ok. So now let's talk a little bit more about helping because that does include some important safety reminders specifically when it comes to making sure that you have a checklist ready for back to school, correct? Like I definitely recommend that, you know, at the beginning of the school year, when the teachers hand out the emergency contact information, everything is up to date. It's also very important to know that Children need care before and after school. And I know that, you know, parents do work. So there is great opportunities to, you know, have programs like the boys and girls club to be able to drop off their kids for activities that they might enjoy. And you're oftentimes in the local school districts building that bridge with the kids. Why is that so important? It's important because it lets them know what we do. We're there to communicate with them to speak to them, not only as like law enforcement, but as like a person. Last year, we did a partnership with the boys and girls club where we taught them a lot of taught the teens, a lot of safety tips when it comes to internet safety, the dangers of vaping topics like that. So, a lot of great things happening out of the New Rochelle Police Department Officer. We appreciate your time and of course, we have a fantastic day ahead. Let's talk a little bit about fire safety when it comes to back to school and kids, you and your members of your department go into the local schools to talk to about what it means when they see a firefighter. First thing if they go into the school, talk about that process for us. Well, we like to start the kids, you know, as young as possible, as young as practical, really to kind of build a culture of fire safety and awareness for people that they can take them with them throughout their lives. This year, we're looking to do maybe some of the higher grades like middle school as well with our fire prevention program just to kind of maintain and edify the alertness and fire safety as people, you know, go about their lives. Right? So what I thought was really interesting though is when you go into the schools at the kindergarten level, the firefighters walk in just like regular guys and gals and then they suit up. Why is that so important for the little ones? Right? So heaven forbid there's a bad event occurs and we have to show up in our turnout gear with our CV, our face mask on and everything. Just so the kids, you know, might have some type of reference that there's actually a person inside that turnout gear and with that mask on and everything. So exactly what you just said, we have the members go in and they have, you know, just street clothes on like this, their station wear and they'll go ahead and they'll suit up and then they'll kind of walk around and high five the kids and all it's kind and then, you know, break their stuff down so the kids can see that there's actually a person in there. Ok. And the kids can actually see some of those firefighters in person today. We know you're going to be here giving out some free stuff. You know how much all those things add up. Right. School supplies don't come cheap these days. First day is only a few weeks away right now. So we want to make sure your child's equipped with what they need. We have this backpack giveaway going on a new Roel today. We're so excited about it and grateful for our partners too are least Salva do put so much time and effort into making sure this is going to be great. She's out there already this morning and Lisa, we're already so excited for the kids to start showing up. We are too. We are only just a few hours away from our big backpack event. I want to show you some of the things that these kids are going to be able to get their hands on. We've got, of course the traditional backpack and the regular school supplies that you think of. But this year we've upped it up a little bit. We've got some snacks, we've got some Goya coconut water, even some cookies and chips, but it's not just about supplies and snacks when it comes to back to school because joining me right now is Julia Murray from refuge of Hope. That's where we are here in New Rochelle along North Avenue for many kids. It's also about spirituality and making sure that they make that transition from their church life to school. So let's talk a little bit about that. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you, Lisa. Yes. One of the things that we really focus on here, a refuge of hope is preparing our Children for life in the world in the public and helping them during their everyday life in school. You know, we're teaching them values, spiritual values, how to help and serve others, how to be a light of Christ um in the world and to positively influence their peers. And we don't want them to lose that, you know, when they leave church and sort of just blend into everything that's going on. We want them carry those values that we've taught them here at the church so that they can influence their peers. So that conversation really ramps up this time of year through Sunday school and other programs at the church. Talk to us a little bit about your involvement with the church and why refuge of hope is so special to you personally. So I'm a deacon at the church. I'm also an intercessor which means that I pray for others in need. Um And I help out in other ways as well. Refuge of hope really is a special place for me. Because my mom was here starting in 2015. And when she passed away in 2021 I came after her, you know, she really wanted me to be a member of this church and I was very resistant. And look at you now, you're doing so much good and so much for the local community. Yeah. And that's really what it's all about. It's really about putting our Christian values into practice, right? Serving others, helping the community and things like backpack, give away what we do during Thanksgiving where we give away hundreds of dinners for the community. They make a real difference. They make a tremendous difference in the lives of those who are in need. And that's what we're trying to do here is help those kids get a good start for the back to school year and you're going to be with us all morning long. We appreciate your efforts here. But we are also getting some great weather thankfully for our big backpack event. So let's get right out to Radick. He's got more information on that and a special forecast for New Rochelle.

Let me just show you some of the things that the kids and families are going to be able to pick up today. We've got the great backpack in addition to the traditional supplies that you see right here, but also this year, some snacks and even more fun stuff is going to be happening. It's all going to be happening behind us, the Church of Refuge of Hope of New Rochelle. And we also want to bring in one of the members right now, Francisco Diaz. Thank you so much for being with us. You have been with this church since the beginning. This is a big celebration because March marked 10 years that this church has been a local community. Yes, 10 years and each year after year has been glory to glory each year. What does this church mean to you? And why is it so special to you and your family? This church means so much to me and my family. When we first moved to New Rochelle, I was divorced with my wife, separated with my two sons and we decided to walk into this church and God restored me and my family a year after I was able to get remarried with my wife again and be with my family all over again. So I got a second chance here at Refuge of Hope Church. And that's thanks in part to all of the good that Mariano Rivera and his wife have done for this local community. Yes. Correct. Mariano and Pastor Clara Rivera, wonderful people and um always spend time with you and, and, and have, have that passion and that heart to help families out here, especially here in, in New Rochelle, New York. Yeah. Now you have two teenagers at home. You're getting ready for, back to school. How are you preparing for that? Oh, well, you know, we, we're gonna be here. They're coming out to help me today. She is from Urban Strategies, which is an early head start program here in New Rochelle. Talk to me about how you've partnered with the church to help the little ones get ready for back to school. Yes. Well, we get them ready by equipping them with social and emotional skills as well as language and literacy, cognitive also gross motor, fine motor, we get them ready for elementary school. So we work with the very little one. So what is it that you think they really need because these are kids that are not necessarily going in pre K programs? Correct. Correct. Yes. So what they really need right now is our social and emotional growth. They're not socialized so much since COVID. So it's really important for us to connect them with these resources that we have in the community in order to do so and get them prepared and so talk to us a little bit about when the program is over and what you do, you have a little graduation money for them as well. We do, we actually have cap and gowns, we have different food events that come out. So we have music and we have a ceremony for them to get them ready to prepare for the next step. And you also, I'm hoping help the moms and dads out there because it's emotional for them, seeing their little ones go off to school for the very first time it is. And so we try to support them all the way through and walk them even in the doors with the next step. So it's great. It's got to be fulfilling for you though to have this, your line of work. When you see the success stories as the years go on. It is, it's my passion. I love working with the community and the families and the Children and I'd like to see them grow and it's just, it's wonderful. I love it. Thank you so much for being with us today.
