A Newark man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed two female pedestrians in Newark, authorities announced Wednesday.
David J. Zapata-Vera, 26, surrendered to police June 23, according to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.
Zapata-Vera is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, two counts of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and two counts of endangering an injured victim.
Authorities allege Zapata-Vera struck two women in a crosswalk at the intersection of Park Avenue and North 7th Street on June 20 before fleeing the scene.
The victims were identified as Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran, 58, of Elizabeth, and Maria Isabel DeLosAngeles Salgado Ayala, 61, of Newark. Both were taken to University Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
