Newark man accused of punching nun, sexually assaulting woman in separate robberies
A Newark man was arrested in connection with two robberies, including the sexual assault of a woman after an armed robbery, authorities said Tuesday.
Faheem Green, 25, of Newark, is accused of carrying out both attacks on July 11. Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. said detectives identified and arrested Green the same day after reviewing surveillance video from both crime scenes.
The first robbery occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Orange Street near South 11th Street.
Police said a nun was walking on South 11th Street when a man approached and punched her, causing her to fall. They say he stole her purse before fleeing. She was taken to University Hospital, where she was reported in stable condition.
About 30 minutes later, a second woman told police she was followed after getting off a bus near Hudson Street and Central Avenue. Authorities said the suspect pointed a handgun at her and demanded her purse. After she handed over her belongings, police said he struck her with the gun, pushed her to the ground and applied pressure to her neck until she lost consciousness. When she regained consciousness, she discovered she had been sexually assaulted. She was also taken to University Hospital and was reported in stable condition.
Green is charged with robbery in connection with the first incident. In the second case, he faces charges of robbery, aggravated sexual assault during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault, attempted murder and criminal restraint.
