Yonkers is already called Hollywood on the Hudson, thanks to local studios that produce TV shows and movies.
Now, a sound stage could be added and some residents are concerned.
National Resources and Great Point Studios wants to build about five new film studios in the Ludlow Park area. "We really are building Hollywood on the Hudson," says Robert Halmi, CEO of Great Point Studios. "We have 50 acres there and that’s where we’ve opened our film trade school with the City of Yonkers.”
Some Ludlow Park residents don't want the problems they say an expansion would bring, like pollution and traffic. “This is going to change the character of the neighborhood," says Eileen O'Connor, with the Ludlow Park Residents Association. "We all have seen film studios and they don’t look very nice. They don’t look residential at all and Ludlow Park is a residential neighborhood," says Ruth Montgomery, with the Ludlow Park Residents Association.
To address those concerns, National Resources and Great Point Studios opened its doors Thursday night to show residents how studios can bring opportunities.
People got to tour the Lionsgate Complex and learn more about how fill studios operate and how students at the Robert Halmi Sr. Academy of Film and Television can be involved in these new studios.
"We needed to do a better job at explaining what we do so we wanted them to see firsthand what it’s like to work in a studio versus what they think production is like," says Halmi. The City Council would have to approve the construction of the new studios. There's no word yet when that vote will happen.
Both the Ludlow Park Residents Association and Great Point Studios say it was helpful to discuss more of the details on Thursday.
O’Connor says residents are still skeptical and worried about the zoning change that would be required.
