The new subway gate pilot program has helped reduce fare evasion by 35% in all 20 installed locations, according to MTA officials announced on Wednesday.
The agency says the gates make it more difficult for people to get through without payment.
The new feature has been used by 63 million riders so far. Gov. Kathy Hochul says the gates will be installed at more stations.
"Today I'm announcing the next 20 stations which will be getting these high-grade fare gates. There are four right here in Queens, six in Brooklyn, six in Manhattan, four in The Bronx, and we're just getting started,” she said.
Officials say the new installations may be completed by the end of the year.
MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springe describes the gates as “one of the most important steps we can take to improve the daily experience for riders.”
