Police fatally shot a man Friday after discovering him holding a knife to a wounded woman inside a disabled vehicle in Middle Township, according to state officials.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office released details about the encounter on Saturday.

According to officials, officers came across a disabled vehicle around 10:21 a.m. at Route 9 and Satt Boulevard in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township.

Police approached the vehicle after hearing screaming inside. Officers entered the vehicle and found a man holding a knife to a woman. Two officers fired their guns, hitting the man. He later died.

The woman suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
