Police say they arrested a man who is accused of committing consumer fraud at a gas station in Lakehurst.
Authorities say they initially notified the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs after receiving a complaint that a customer may have been a victim of the use of a skimming device at one of the gas pumps at the "Fuel 4 gas station" on Route 70. Skimming devices help thieves steal credit card information.
An investigation determined an actual skimming device was ruled out. Police say Sukhchain Singh allegedly took customers’information from their credit card purchases, photographed it, and made thousands of dollars in personal purchases with the credit card information.
Police say the latest allegations date back to August 2023 and that the last complaint was reported in April 2024.
Authorities say Consumer Affairs investigators and Lakehurst police learned that the management of the gas station terminated Singh’s employment in April when they became aware of his alleged actions.
Singh at one time had a previous Lakehurst address but was currently staying in the Brooklyn area and was in the U.S. on a passport from India. He was taken into custody and later charged with fraudulent use of a credit card and theft. He was later taken to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River pending a bail reform hearing.
Singh faces five counts of fraud and up to $50,000 in fines.
Anyone with information should contact Officer Christian Hernandez of the Lakehurst Borough Police Department at 732-657-7811 or Investigator Anthony Fontana of the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs at 732-929-2105.
