The U.S. holiday shopping season is kicking off with an estimated 183 million shoppers hitting stores in search of deals between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation with global sales expected to rake in more than $75 billion.
The Cross-County Center in Yonkers saw shoppers as early as 6 a.m.
“We just came from Bed, Bath & Beyond,” says Luciano Espinal from the Bronx. “So far so good. I saved maybe $20.”
The outdoor mall is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Parking is free and holiday-themed pop-ups like food trucks, photos with Santa, ice-skating and a holiday market will be offered for the first three weekends in December.
“We have more than 80 stores and restaurants,” says Cross County Center Marketing Manager Kayli Tarcy. “Target has an exclusive release with the Taylor Swift Eras Tour book. Kay Jewelers and Pandora has up to 40% off.”
Major retailers are offering deals to lure shoppers in. Macy’s has in-store only deals under $30 on apparel and small appliances with 60% off select toys. Victoria’s Secret, Forever21 and Ulta Beauty are offering 40% off and everything is 50% off at Gap and Old Navy.
Shoppers are expected to look for deals on items including electronics, apparel, grocery, furniture, bedding and cosmetics this year.
“Macy’s has some great deals on fashion and home goods and of course, you have to stop at the Toys “R” Us pop-up on the third floor,” Tarcy says.
Jewelry retailers like Pandora, Kay and Zales have up to 30-40% off in stores.
Despite the continually growing popularity of online shopping, the National Retail Federation says two-thirds of holiday shopping will be in stores Black Friday weekend. MORE Black Friday coverage:
