The Pequot Library's 64th annual summer book sale is underway in Southport. It's one of the biggest book sales in New England with 100,000 books for sale.
People couldn't wait to get their hands on all the hot deals. They have come from all over the country and started lining up two hours before the sale started.
"They got everything that I can imagine. I've been coming for years," said Robert Shulman, from Wilton. Alex Garmizo came all the way from Florida. "Hopefully filling up about six banker boxes and then taking one on the plane and shipping the rest back," said Garmizo.
It's books as far as the eye can see. "The books are all usually super great quality, and there's so many things to choose from," said Mackenzie Boyce, from Shelton. The library gets 200,000 of them a year. They've been separated into 30 different categories to satisfy all the shoppers. "Poetry, philosophy, art, history," said Garmizo. "A lot of stuff in the fiction books," said Boyce. "It could be anything from gardening to a good mystery," said Shulman. It takes a team of 20 people to sort and inspect these books all year. "It's a wonderful activity. It brings the community together. We get people, mostly retired people who come and help and spend their mornings here or afternoons here processing the books," said book sale organizer Doug Fried. They have music, too.
The sales run through Tuesday.
The proceeds help support the library and many local charities.
