A street in the Longwood section of The Bronx is now celebrating a new name – Héctor Lavoe Way.

The intersection of Westchester and Bryant avenues was renamed for the Puerto Rican salsa singer.

The legendary singer died in 1993. He was nicknamed "El cantante de los cantantes" for his powerful voice

Hector Leguillow says his friend’s talents will never be forgotten.

“The most spontaneous, quick minded singers that improvise in Latin music," said Hector Leguillow.

Lavoe moved into the building on the corner of Westchester and Bryant avenues with his sister when he first came to The Bronx from Puerto Rico.

"He loved The Bronx. So this was like his home in 1963 and he was like 16 years old," said Leguillow.

In the crowd of people celebrating the unveiling was his son who still lives in The Bronx. He said he is proud that his father’s music touched so many people.

“To have a parent with such prestige, such power in the influence of music and it’s very important for him to be acknowledged," said José Perez.
