Hundreds of unionized beer delivery workers are continuing their strike, demanding retirement security and fair labor practices.
Dozens of workers held signs, chanted and made a public plea outside Manhattan Beer Distributors' Wyandanch facility.
"At the end of this, we want a fair contract that maintains our retirement benefits so that our guys can retire with dignity," Union Shop Steward Joe Gonzalez said.
Manhattan Beer Distributors is one of the largest beer purveyors in the country, with brands including Coors, Corona and White Claw.
Long Island businesses that rely on these beer deliveries are already feeling their taps run dry.
Jabed Uddin owns the Express Gas & Food Mart on Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park.
He said he placed his usual order for beer on Monday, but it was never delivered on Tuesday like it normally is.
He said he has four to five more days before his supply runs out.
"I called a Manhattan Beer sales rep, and I wanted to know why they didn't deliver any beer," Uddin said. "I don't have much. Every week I get a new shipment, but I'm almost out of beer."
Driver Luis Perez has been working for Manhattan for more than a decade. He said he joined the picket line to protect his future and his family.
"My message to customers is stay strong, we'll be back and stay united," he said.
Manhattan Beer Distributors Founder and CEO Simon Bergson told News 12 in a statement today:
"A small committee of union members has decided to proceed with this strike without putting forth our offer to a vote of the full membership. We have made a very compelling and attractive offer after several weeks of negotiations, and it is disappointing that the union has encouraged a strike without presenting this offer to its members.
Our doors remain open as some union members have already chosen to come to work. We are working for a swift resolution and hope for minimal disruption of services.”
Gonzalez said the union is back at the negotiating table today, hoping to strike a fair deal.
