A Long Beach man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he crashed his car into a tree and then fled on foot with one of his passengers.
Another passenger in the car was later pronounced dead.
Christhian Velasquez-Galeano allegedly drove drunk and struck a tree in the early hours of Sunday morning in Garden City.
Police said it happened on Stewart Avenue near Nassau Boulevard. According to court documents, Velasquez-Galeano fled the car with one of his passengers, leaving a third person behind. That person, identified as 27-year-old Marco Antonio Zuniga of Long Beach, was later pronounced dead.
According to court documents, the defendant and passenger he fled with were found to be hiding in bushes by a Garden City police officer. That officer followed footsteps in the snow which court documents say led him to the men on Nassau Boulevard.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly called the two men who fled the car “cowards.”
Prosecutors said the defendant has prior DWIs. At his arraignment Monday, a judge held him without bail.
        His family had no comment.
