Local emergency officials in Dobbs Ferry are urging caution with the disposal of lithium-ion batteries following a fire in a garbage truck at the DPW garage Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Workers noticed smoke emanating from the back of the truck, and after dumping the load, they discovered a burning lithium-ion battery amidst the garbage.
Fire crews had to dismantle the pile to remove the hazardous battery. The Westchester County Department of Emergency Services' Hazardous Materials team was called in to ensure the battery was disposed of properly.
As a consequence of this event, village officials have issued advice on safely disposing of lithium-ion batteries, emphasizing that they should never be placed in regular garbage or recycling bins. Instead, residents are encouraged to take these batteries to the Westchester County Household Material Recovery Facility.
