A man was saved from a fiery car crash in Haledon after a local lawmaker and two good Samaritans jumped into action.
"As I was driving down Barbour Street, I looked in my rearview mirror. I saw smoke, then flames," State Rep. Al Abdelaziz, (NJ-35-D), said.
Abdelaziz said he turned his own car around and rushed toward the car crash.
"Once I saw the accident, flames were getting more intense. There were two good Samaritans who I hope we can find. One gentlemen opened up the door. I proceeded to go to the car. The driver was still hunched over the steering wheel. We said the car's on fire, get out. He couldn't get out. So, I'm pulling him out. The other good Samaritan came and assisted me in pulling him out of there. Then, there was other people once we got him out of the car moving him away."
Haledon police said the driver, Faquan Barnes, hit two parked cars before his vehicle caught fire over the weekend.
According to police, Barnes admitted to being under the influence of an illicit substance at the time of the crash.
"I see this car flying, like how you make a movie, flying sideways," Walid Bejdough, whose cars were totaled in the crash, said. "I heard the boom, like a bomb. He hit my car, my Mercedes, and then hit my wife's car, RAV4. The car was sideways, turned, and not even seconds, the flames."
Barnes was arrested and charged with being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.
"Thank God no one was seriously injured. Thank God there was no innocent kids walking on the sidewalk. He could've hit me if he missed those cars," Abdelaziz said.
Police are still working to identify the two good Samaritans who helped pull Barnes from the car.
