A Somerset County jury reached a verdict in the trial of a Frankin school bus aide on trial concerning the death of a wheelchair-bound student.
The jury found Amanda Davila guilty of endangering the welfare of a child in the death of 6-year-old Fajr Williams in 2023. Davila was acquitted on the more serious charge of aggravated and reckless manslaughter.
Jurors saw video footage from inside the bus, which shows Williams slumping in her chair and being strangled by her seat harness, while Davila was distracted and using her phone. Davila had admitted to making a mistake by not sitting next to Fajr, but defended her use of the phone and earbuds, saying her bosses had encouraged her to have her phone handy.
However, the prosecution argued that Davila had recklessly ignored her training and failed to check on Fajr during the bus ride.
The prosecutor will seek a sentence of five to 10 years in prison when Davila is sentenced on March 7.
