New video shows the moment an officer fired their gun and injured a man in Mott Haven.
Police said it happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sunday at an apartment building on East 148th Street near College Avenue.
The NYPD said officers shot the 32-year-old man in the torso after he ran up a stairwell with a kitchen knife in hand.
The full confrontation is not seen in the Ring video, but it captured the sound of a gun, followed by one officer screaming, “shots fired.”
Moments later, the video shows other officers rushing into the building, and then taking the 32-year-old out on a stretcher.
“I saw all those cops, they’re coming,” said Juan Rivera, who gave News 12 his Ring video. “I said, ‘What’s going on?’”
Police said officers ordered the man to drop the knife - both verbally and with hand gestures - but he didn’t stop.
“We couldn’t even walk [into the building] because there were a lot of cops over here,” Rivera said.
The NYPD said it all started with a 911 call about someone stealing an air conditioner. Police believe the man with the weapon was the 911 caller.
The knife-wielding 32-year-old confronted a man in the building’s alleyway, police said, then went inside where he was shot.
“The two [female police officers], they could control the guy; but they got scared, they [were] screaming in and out with the gun in their hands,” Rivera said. “Then from there, they started shooting right there [on the first floor].”
As of Monday night, police have not yet released the 32-year-old's name, but he was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
Police said the shooting is still under investigation.
