A judge ended the consent decree on Friday, which has been in place for the last nine years.
The Justice Department says Newark has completed the required changes in stops, searches and use-of-force. Federal officials praise the progress the department has made and say they will continue partnering with Newark on public safety.

State Sen. Angela McKnight says Newark’s civilian review board helped build trust and she wants other communities to have the same oversight.
