It is Inauguration Day, and today Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. The president-elect will address the nation today and lay out his plans and vision for the next 4 years. News 12 is in DC for the inauguration and spoke exclusively with former Congressman Lee Zeldin and Peter King. Zeldin says he'll do everything he can to make sure Long Island voices are heard if he gets Senate approval to lead the EPA. As far as Long Island goes, we have representatives who come to Washington DC as we're passing different bills, and they are advocating for the voices of Long Islanders. That voice is certainly going to be amplified every opportunity that I have as a Long Islander serving in President Trump's cabinet. And the inauguration will also be held indoors for the first time since 1985 due to the cold weather. All eyes will be on the inauguration ceremony today, and all day long we'll be speaking with officials and experts on what's to come. And joining us right now from Washington is former New York State Assemblyman Republican Mike LaPetri. Mike, good to see you. Thanks for waking up early with us. What do you expect today? Uh, good morning. Today, the sun sets on an era of incompetence and weakness, and today, what we're looking to see is a new age of prosperity, strength, peace, hope, and common sense. People are excited all throughout DC. I'm down here in DC today for the inauguration, and you're gonna be seeing tons and tons of people all throughout the streets, so hopeful, so proud of what's become for America. You saw it yesterday with now Trump saying the amount of executive orders they're going to be unveiled after his inauguration. We're going to see immediately like that, you're going to start seeing some differences and some hope for the future. A lot of New Yorkers, a lot of Long Islanders there, Mike, um, a lot of Long Islanders, quite frankly, who have some influence in this administration. What do you expect in terms of the Trump White House working hand in hand with officials here on Long Island? I think it's gonna be, uh, great to see the House majority. Uh, they're already pushing forward, great uh pieces of legislation, Lake and Riley Act now, looking forward, we want that to go towards President Trump's desk. I know that the, uh, the House Republicans pushed forward, keeping men out of girls sports. Unfortunately, uh, some Democratic representatives on the island did not vote for that, but that's neither here nor there. The point is, most importantly, is that common sense policies are being put forward and they're being done ASAP, and you'll be seeing secure borders, safe communities, and more money in our pockets. And for the past 4 years, the people have had enough and they want to make sure they're the right people in there to speak out for us Long Islanders to do what's right, not what's easy. Joining us now from our newsroom in our Beth Page studios is former Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. Laura, good morning. Thanks for making the drive here to our studios. Um, tell us what you expect today, not just during the ceremonies, but then, uh, when day one literally begins for the Trump administration. So day one, soon to be sworn in, President Trump has promised a flurry, a blizzard, if you will, of executive orders having to do with deportation, having to do with all kinds of Biden policies that he wants to revert to reverse that his voters want him to reverse. So it's going to be, I think it's going to be a lot of news coming at you really fast. What do you think the Trump administration is going to mean here, at least in the short term for Long Islanders, Laura? Well, I think, you know, obviously a lot of Long Island voters supported Donald Trump in both counties. He won Nassau for the first time in his 3 elections, and I think, you know, there was an interesting story in the Times yesterday about how if Donald Trump might not be popular, a lot of his policies are, such as deportations, such as, uh, terror. But it'll be interesting to see the devil is always in the details and a misstep with deportations if you deport all of the migrant workers, for instance, who are here illegally or if you tariff everything coming in that could tank the economy. So if there's going to be a tension there between what was promised and what's actually going to happen. Laura, real quickly, uh, a lot of Long Islanders down there today for the ceremony. Um, do you think he will remain popular on Long Island? You mentioned that he, he is popular here right now. He won both Nassau and Suffolk. We'll, we'll see. I mean, it's, it's very hard to predict because Donald Trump is famous for promising a lot of things and maybe delivering on 50% of them. Uh, you know, people say, oh, he's just a showman, it's an exaggeration. He's not really going to do this or that. We'll see. And there's going to be an interesting tension between the tech billionaires and the national populist wing of the party led by Steve Bannon. That's going to be interesting to watch. Already seeing some of that come to a head. We'll be watching Laura Cohen, thanks so much.

And joining us now from Washington is former congressman and Republican Anthony D Esposito. Congressman, good to see you. Good morning. Uh, tell us what you expect on day one of the Trump presidency. Oh, good morning, Rich and happy inauguration Day to Long Island. Uh, it's gonna be a great day here in Washington DC. It may be snowy uh and uh a little dim, but let me tell you something, the sun is shining bright because people are ready for a new day in America. Uh, we're looking forward to the inauguration at noon, and, uh, President Trump has vowed to immediately get to work, uh, signing close to 100 executive orders to secure our border, to grow our economy. Uh, to make this country safe again, and I know that, uh, all of my former colleagues that I've been speaking to, uh, they are ready to get to work, to roll up their sleeves and to carry out the agenda, uh, of President Trump. So you expect the president to hit the ground running today. What will that mean for Long Island? Well, I think that a lot of the work that we've laid forth obviously over the last Congress advocating to restore salt. I think that that's something that is obviously at the top of President Trump's agenda. He had Long Island Republicans at Mar a Lago last week to discuss it. It's been an ongoing conversation. Um, and obviously, Long Islanders have seen, especially those who travel in and out of New York City, the disastrous effects of of the open border policies and the sanctuary city policies, and that is something that President Trump wants to get to work on day one, which will be today. As soon as he gets sworn in, there's executive orders already prepared that he's willing to sign to get this country back on track. Alright, we're gonna see how this all plays out. Joining us right now is Doctor Mina Boz, a political science professor at Hofstra University, a presidential historian. Doctor Bose, good morning. I guess we have to start with this breaking news of the final actions of President Biden. What will that mean for President Trump today? Well, it's certainly, thank you, Rich, for having me. It's this will be a consequential day and outgoing President Biden is making his mark on the day with issuing these preemptive pardons. There was really, I think, a question as to whether this would happen when he didn't make the announcement on his last full day in office, but I think it's very clear that the message is to the incoming president that that President Biden is recognizing the actions of Dr. Fauci, General Milley, the January 6th committee members, and and saying that that their actions that he's not saying that any crime was committed, but is the pardon shields them from being prosecuted, which has been for any potential allegations which of course the incoming attorney general and FBI director, assuming they're confirmed. There have been indications in the past. So I think it's a very clear message from the outgoing president to the incoming one, and they'll be having tea in the White House shortly. So, you know, I think that I don't think it was unexpected, but to have it this on the morning of the inauguration, I think sends a very clear message from the President Biden. Absolutely, Dr. Bose, we have about 30 seconds left. Trump 2.0, historical context. What does this mean? Uh, only 2nd president in American history to be elected to two nonconsecutive terms, has learned a lot from his first term as well as his 4 years out of office, and we are going to see a very eventful presidency starting with today, I would say in the. Within the next 1212 hours from now we will have a number of executive orders issued even more by the end of the week. Immigration tariffs, um, DEI initiatives and executive appointments, political appointees, uh, the Trump too will hit the ground running, no question about it. It will be fascinating to watch and that we will. Doctor Mina Boz, thank you.
