Hundreds of Glen Rock residents issued notices about uneven sidewalks

Residents say the sidewalk saga dates back to earlier this year, when several residents were reported in two anonymous emails that their sidewalks weren’t ADA-compliant.

Neighbors are at odds with local leaders over what they say is inconsistent enforcement and reporting of a decades-old law on sidewalk maintenance after over 300 homes are reported.
Glen Rock residents say the issues stem from uneven sidewalks, anonymous reporting, and inconsistent enforcement. Alberto Quiroz has lived in Glen Rock for 7 years.
"The town just took this spam email and is acting on it," Quiroz said.
Residents say the sidewalk saga dates back to earlier this year, when several residents were reported in two anonymous emails that their sidewalks weren’t ADA-compliant.
Residents say about 330 homes in the borough were “targeted.” Residents say town leaders took those anonymous complaints and moved forward with requests for homeowners to make repairs for thousands of dollars.
"I need to reset 17 slabs and replace two of them. I got a quote for $3,500, which is a lot of money," Quiroz said.
Residents say that the homes were chosen without any reasoning behind them. They now have orange markers on the sidewalks painted on by the Department of Public Works, determining what needs to be done to be compliant.
But it gets a bit tricky. Homeowners say most of the damage to the sidewalks is caused by the trees, which are the borough’s responsibility. In fact, the only time they say they’re responsible for repairs to the sidewalk is when the home is up for sale.
Councilmember Seth Rosenstein tells News 12 he stands with the homeowners.
"We have to come up with a policy that figures out how to take into account the borough’s responsibility, if at all, for dealing with the sidewalks," Rosenstein said.
"I don't want anyone to have an accident, but also a little bit of common sense,” Quiroz said. “But it's not about the ordinance, it's about how they're enforcing the ordinance.”
Since the notices went out, several homeowners have started making repairs. There’s a council meeting on Wednesday night. Residents plan to be in attendance.
