yesterdayNew Jersey American Water has successfully isolated the large water main break on Morris Avenue (Route 82) in Union Township and has moved on to the repair phase.
Crews are working on two holes in the road, and water is no longer being pumped out.
Morris Avenue will remain closed as crews work to restore water service and repair the road.
This is the fourth day of the repair efforts, with minimal visible progress until today.
The cause of the break, as well as the size and age of the pipe, have not been disclosed.
Suburban Golf Club is closed due to a blocked driveway. Lowe's is open, but without water. Applebee's is closed during lunch and dinner hours. Portable toilets have been set up outside affected businesses.
A separate water issue has been reported on Bloy Street in Hillside, with water emerging from a sidewalk and flowing into a storm drain. New Jersey American Water is also working on this situation.
Traffic continues to be detoured.

Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound detour:
- Motorists on Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound will be directed to turn left onto Stuyvesant Avenue
- Turn right onto Vauxhall Road
- Turn right on Salem Road back to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound
Route 82/Morris Avenue westbound detour:
- Motorists on Route 82/Morris Avenue westbound will be directed to turn right onto Salem Road
- Turn left onto Vauxhall Road
- Turn left onto Stuyvesant Avenue back to Route 82/Morris Avenue
Route 22 eastbound to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound detour:
- Motorists on Route 22 eastbound wishing to take the ramp to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound will be directed to continue on Route 22 eastbound
- Take the ramp to Union/Elizabeth
- Turn left onto Vauxhall Road toward Elizabeth
- Turn right on Salem Road back to Route 82/Morris Avenue eastbound
Route 22 westbound to Ingersoll Terrace detour:
- Motorists on Route 22 westbound wishing to take the ramp to Ingersoll Terrace will be directed to take the ramp to Union/Milburn, which is before the ramp to Ingersoll Terrace
- Turn right onto Vauxhall Road
- Turn left onto Stuyvesant Avenue back to Route 82/Morris Avene
