Air quality has dipped into the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" category Wednesday evening because of a large brush fire in Inwood Hill Park in upper Manhattan. The north wind has brought dangerous smoke plumes across southern parts of the Bronx, most of Manhattan and even some faint smoke into northern parts of Brooklyn.

The wind has gusted up to 25 mph through the evening, and is expected to be only a bit breezy overnight, between 15 and 20 mph. With low temperatures expected to be near 37 for Thursday morning, it will feel like upper 20s to around 30 degrees.

Highs will be stuck in the 40s Thursday afternoon with a lighter breeze. That should temporarily reduce the high fire danger, but the risk returns Friday.

Gusts will increase to over 20 mph with sunny skies and very low humidity on Friday. Those are the exact ingredients needed for rapid fire spread. Friday and Saturday's threat could grow to be near-record highs if the warmer temperatures, sunny skies, and breezy conditions.

No rain is expected until midweek next week.
