Former Beacon highway department supervisor dies in house fire

Four Beacon and two Castle Point Fire Department members sustained minor injuries.

A fire in Beacon killed a retired city official, according to a city spokesman.
The body of 81-year-old Eugene Murphy, a former Highway Department supervisor, was found in the living room on the first floor at 9 Alice St.
The fire broke out just before 6:30 a.m., with heavy flames at the front of the house, extending to the second floor. Firefighters found no other occupants.
Four Beacon and two Castle Point Fire Department members sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.
Firefighters found heavy fire from the front of the house that extended to the second floor.
The house has been condemned by the city’s Building Department.
An adjacent house sustained some radiant heat damage.
