FDNY: New federal legislation will combat lithium-ion battery fires in NYC

The bill, which is being pushed through in this week's federal budget bill, would prevent illegal batteries from entering the U.S., as well as allow the Consumer Product Safety Commission to patrol city ports and deal out federal punishment for those who break the law.

FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker is celebrating new legislation, that if passed, could prevent uncertified lithium-ion batteries from coming into the country.
"This legislation when put into law, will save lives," he said during a press conference Wednesday.
The bill, which is being pushed through in this week's federal budget bill, would prevent illegal batteries from entering the U.S., as well as allow the Consumer Product Safety Commission to patrol city ports and deal out federal punishment for those who break the law.
"And it will allow the CPSC to issue recalls for unsafe devices,” Tucker added.
The legislation is set to be voted on as soon as Thursday.
