Commuters should be prepared to pay more when it comes to their daily public transit commute.
On Wednesday, the MTA discussed a likely fare increase for commuters coming August 2025.
"It goes back to Dick Ravitch and Gov. Patterson, the pattern has been the MTA's fare goes up 2% per year and that is always programmed in the financial plan,” said Janno Lieber, chairman and CEO of the MTA.
Lieber says this possible increase is routine and commuters should not be surprised that it is going up.
The last time the fare increased was in August 2023, when it went up from $2.75 to $2.90. Now, it is proposed to be $3 in August 2025.
This likely fare increase comes as congestion pricing is set to go into effect in less than a month.
