Welcome back. A new poll from Sienna College research shows Governor Kathy Hoel is gaining some support but it may not be enough to sway an election. It says 33% of New Yorkers would reelect Hoel, 57% would prefer someone else for the role. It also asked about the governor's new congestion pricing plan that will now charge drivers nine bucks when entering Manhattan below 60th street. The toll will go up to 12 bucks in 2028 $15 by 2031 majority of the state against that as well. The poll also touched on the migrant crisis, more than half of New Yorkers say the state should support the federal government to deport migrants living in this state illegally joining us. Now is Sienna College pollster Steven Greenberg. Steven always good to have you on the show. Thanks so much for joining us. Uh, let's talk about this from the governor's perspective first. What do the numbers tell you? Well, I, I would say this is a good news, bad news poll for the governor. Uh, the good news is her job approval and her favorability ratings are both up for the second consecutive poll. They both hit their low water mark in September up a little in October, up a little in November or December, I should say. And as you showed her, her job approval rating is now close to break even. So that, that's the positive. The bad news is both her job approval and her favorability remain underwater. Her favorability rating hasn't been positive since January of this year when she was at 45% favorable, 42% unfavorable and you talked about the generic reelect number, but let's break that down even further. Among Democrats alone, 48% of Democrats say they're prepared to reelect Hoel 40% of Democrats want someone else. We're already seeing some other candidates position themselves for a possible run whether it be in a Democratic primary or Republicans considering a challenge to the governor Steven. I wanna look now at another one of the questions that you asked in this poll. It kind of goes hand in hand with how people view the governor is the state on the right track or is it headed in the wrong direction? Let's take a look at the numbers here right now. Right? Track 36% wrong direction, 50% and don't know or no opinion. Uh somewhere in the middle there, 14% you see it on your screen. What about that? Steven? Her number is going up a little bit, but this doesn't bode well for the sitting governor. No, I mean, and, and unfortunately New York voters have been in a funk, uh, an electoral funk for, for a while now. That, that, that right track wrong direction has been in the wrong direction, uh, for, for the better part of a year or two now. Uh, and that's not good news for the governor. We see a partisan divide. So Republicans overwhelmingly say that the state is headed in the wrong direction. But even Democrats are barely positive. 45% of Democrats say the state on the right track, 37% say we're headed in the wrong direction. And maybe one of the issues that is driving those numbers is something that you brought up. Uh the migrant crisis. You said that this has been going on for the better part of the year. So too has the migrant crisis. Let's take a look at the poll numbers here. When you asked specifically about that, only 8% of New Yorkers said that they felt that New York is handling this in a better way. They're in a better place on the migrant crisis than before. 54% say it's worse than before. And 30% said stayed about the same 7% or so. Not sure or they refuse to answer. But uh Steven, that may be at least as I look at it one of the issues that's driving down that right direction, wrong direction response. Absolutely. Look, I mean, the big issues for voters right now are cost of living crime, the availability of affordable housing and the migrant issue. And, and on all four of those issues, voters say the situation in New York has gotten worse in the last year, not better. And when we asked voters, do you think that depending on what the Trump administration winds up doing? But if they wind up trying to, uh, deport migrants living in New York illegally, should the state support or oppose that effort? A majority of New Yorkers, 54% say the state should support the feds in that effort compared to 36% who said the state should oppose that effort. And Mayor Eric Adams may be in that group now working to support the Trump administration's efforts in that regard. Judging by some of his comments, let's look at another issue that is very unpopular here on Long Island in the South. Congestion pricing. The governor put a pause on it before the election about a week after the election. It's back on with a change. Now, a $9 congestion pricing toll could have been 15. Look at the numbers though again, supporting this. We're under 30% opposing it. Uh much larger numbers here in the middle. Don't know. A lot of people uh have very definitive answers on this issue. Steven and in the suburbs specifically, we'll show those numbers uh ahead but even across the state, it's not popular. No that. That's exactly right. Look, overall, uh, 29% of New Yorkers support, uh, the governor's congestion pricing plan, a majority, 51% oppose. But in the burbs, better than 2 to 1, only 28% of downstate suburbanites support this proposal. 60% oppose it. It's not much better in the city. The city voters oppose it as well by a margin of 56 to 32%. And while there is a partisan divide, 66% of Republicans oppose the plan. 56% of independents. Even her core base of Democrats closely divided. 40% of Democrats support this congestion pricing plan, but a small plurality, 42% oppose it. Well, I guess it's gonna see uh it's gonna depend on how this is implemented, what the impacts are. But Steven, we have seen Republicans run successfully here on Long Island at least uh being able to take advantage of these issues. And judging by the polling data here, we have about 30 seconds left but it seems like that's gonna be part of their core strategy again in the upcoming year. No question. Look, Governor Hole over the last week or so has been trying to make the cost of living in New York an issue for her. She's trying to claim she's addressing it and trying to bring prices down. I think what voters are gonna see in congestion pricing is a new tax being implemented by governor hole in the state of New York. And we know that, uh, downers do not like a new tax like this, that is for sure, Stephen Greenberg, we always appreciate your time. Thanks so much for joining us. My pleasure. Welcome back. If you paid extra fees for one of those red light camera tickets in Suffolk, you could get some money back. A state court has ruled that drivers who paid administrative fees are eligible for class certification, that means they will be entitled to restitution from the county as part of any kind of class action lawsuit. We spoke to Republican county legislator Rob Trotta just last week on this show who predicted this? Not only do I think they, they will, I think they should because we told the Republicans told them early on this fee was illegal. You see N county just eliminated their fees when this was put in place by the State of New York. It was only supposed to be $50. Now, this comes after that same court ruled that any extra fees on top of the $50 base fine and $25 late fee are illegal. Some state Republicans are looking to create a control board to oversee the MTAS finances. The MT A has been mismatch, there has been fraud waste abuse. The lawmakers announced that plan in hot pog O over the last week, but Governor Hochul says she doesn't think it's necessary. It's called the state legislature, it's called the governor. Um We are not looking to have people with political agendas try to subvert our efforts to deliver the best system possible. State Senator Dean Murray says he'll introduce that legislation to create the financial watchdog next year. It's been a big week in Washington for congressman, Tom Suozzi. The house has passed three of his bipartisan bills. The first is securing our Northern Borders Act which will establish a homeland security northern border mission center. It would serve as the central hub for coordinating efforts to enforce immigration laws. Next is the shield against CCP Act which will establish a homeland security working group to identify, evaluate and counter possible threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party. And then there is the increasing baseline updates act that would require the congressional budget office to provide two updates a year to its baseline and mandate the president to submit specific budget data to Congress. Here's what the congressman had to say about all of this. We've showed that Democrats and Republicans can work together to get things done. These are three pieces of important legislation. They're not big, they're not flashy, but they're important to make our country work. Let's keep on doing more of that in the months and years ahead. President Biden has granted clemency to nearly 1500 people and that includes three long Islanders. Brian Callahan pled guilty to a massive Ponzi scheme. 10 years ago, the president also commuted the sentences of Andrew Mackie who pled guilty to a Ponzi scheme and Brown who was convicted of conspiring to sell drugs on the East end. 39 people who were convicted of nonviolent crimes were pardoned as well.
