The Federal Aviation Administration is raising safety concerns over laser strikes on aircraft flying above New Jersey.

The agency says it has received dozens of new laser reports from pilots across New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. They say laser strikes are up significantly this month in New Jersey, with a 269% increase over the same period last year.

Airline passenger Paul Elliot Williams says he captured a suspected laser strike on Friday. Williams posted on X that he was on a flight traveling from Raleigh, North Carolina to New York when he saw the laser over New Jersey around 8 p.m. He stated that he believes it may have been someone “drone hunting.”

Pointing a laser at an aircraft is a federal crime. “People who shine lasers at aircraft face FAA fines of up to $11,000 per violation and up to $30,800 for multiple laser incidents,” the FAA states on its website.
