Dr. Christopher Irving, superintendent of East Orange Schools, announced that all schools will operate on a half-day schedule today, Oct. 17, due to unforeseen circumstances.
The note on its website apologized for the late notice and asked parents for their understanding.
The reason for the half-day schedule hasn't been officially disclosed, and it is unclear if there is a connection to the recent announced layoffs. Over 70 East Orange School District employees will be without a job effective Dec. 15.
Superintendent Irving previously stated that the district lacks funds to pay employees, having received only $200,000 in state aid. He cited salaries, out-of-district tuition, food service and transportation as the district's biggest budget challenges.
