An East New York mother says she’s been living with cracked paint, peeling floors - and now a strange residue by her window.
Maria tells News 12 she’s called NYCHA more than 50 times this year about conditions inside her apartment but says she’s still waiting for a permanent fix.
Maria and her two children have lived in the unit for four years. About a year after moving in, a washing machine leak damaged the floors, and she says they began to peel away. Now eight months ago, she tried a quick fix with stick-on tiles but those are now peeling back, too, exposing the wood underneath.
“It’s pitiful. Look at this,” Maria said as she lifted one of the tiles. She adds the problems make it difficult to host family or celebrate holidays at home. Her 13-year-old daughter wants to invite friends over but can't.
“NYCHA staff visited the apartment today and are working with the resident to schedule the painting and coordinate the necessary environmental testing. Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 or submit work tickets through the MyNYCHA application.”
