Debris incident closes westbound lower-level lanes to George Washington Bridge
Closures are in place after debris fell from the ceiling onto a westbound lane of the Cross-Bronx Expressway near the George Washington Bridge around 8:30 a.m.
All westbound lanes leading to the bridge’s lower level are shut down until the roadway is determined to be safe.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill said she has been briefed on the reports. “The Port Authority is investigating the incident and will undertake any necessary repairs immediately,” Sherrill said in a statement Wednesday.
No injuries have been reported.
Officials said they received an incident report around 8:30 a.m. and have not released details about what caused the debris to fall.
Travelers headed to the 181st Street exit are being directed to the Jerome Ave. and Major Deegan exits, officials said. The 181st Street exit is closed as of late Thursday morning.
