A Trenton man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that occurred April 19 on Route 1 North, authorities said.
Darnell Ingram, 45, was charged May 11 with vehicular homicide, assault by auto, causing death while operating a motor vehicle while suspended, causing serious bodily injury while operating a motor vehicle while suspended, and driving under the influence, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities said the crash happened around 2:04 a.m. at the intersection of Route 1 North and Ridge Road. A 2025 Toyota Camry driven by a 31‑year‑old Jersey City woman was struck from behind by a 2012 Lexus SUV driven by Leonid Tubert, 53, of Chester, Pennsylvania.
The Camry’s driver and passenger got out to assess the damage and speak with Tubert. Authorities said Ingram, who was driving a 2016 Lexus sedan, then struck the rear of the Lexus SUV, pinning Tubert between the two cars.
Tubert was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in critical condition and later died. Ingram was treated for serious injuries. The Camry driver was treated for minor injuries, while her passenger was not injured.
Authorities said Ingram turned himself in May 11 and was released on home detention after a pretrial hearing.
