Mayor Andre Sayegh has been reelected to a third term in office, according to the Passaic County Clerk.
Sayegh won by a margin of about 600 votes. His two biggest opponents were two current council members who made a strong showing in the race.
Sayegh campaigned heavily on quality‑of‑life issues, which have been a priority for his office over the past year. Those efforts included targeting illegal dumping and promoting Paterson Plus, an app that allows residents to report issues such as downed power lines and potholes.
The mayor’s office has also worked to create new parks and playing fields, including Vista Park, which recently opened. There has also been an effort to address roads that frequently flood, including River Road.
Public safety remains a major issue in the city. In April, four people were shot along 10th Avenue. This past weekend, six people were shot on Mother’s Day. No arrests have been announced in those recent shootings.
Since 2023, Paterson has not been in control of its own police department, which has been run by the state. It remains unclear whether that arrangement will be reversed going forward. Sayegh has the backing of Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who could potentially play a role in that situation.
City officials have said shooting victims are down by 53%.
