Emergency crews remain on the scene of a large and active fire in Roselle Park.
The five-alarm fire happened at Crossfield Products Corporation on Valley Road. News 12 is told it is a flooring company that makes resin for floors.
Mayor Joseph Signorello says the business has been in the area for over 50 years.
He says when the fire first began, black smoke came out of the building. He says he believes the explosions were caused by propane tanks. Witnesses who spoke to News 12 say they heard multiple explosions.
Crews from Roselle, Cranford, Westfield and Linden were called to help.
Signorello says the fire is not under control and expects crews to remain on scene for at least a few more hours.
Many houses in the area were also without power after a transformer blew.
Signorello says officials are not concerned about the air quality, but Roselle Park police are asking residents who live on the west end of town to keep their doors and windows closed "as air quality may be diminished due to heavy smoke."
Signorello says they are concerned about the fire spreading to nearby homes.
A few homes were evacuated as a precaution and officials investigated to make sure there was no risk of other properties catching on fire.
Police are advising residents to avoid the area of West Westfield Avenue and Valley Road because of the fire.
No one was inside when the fire started.
