Cranbury Township officials are moving ahead with an appraisal next month of the Henry Farm.
It will allow the township to condemn the property along South River Road and then take the farm through eminent domain. From there, Cranbury officials plan to fill the 21-acre site with state-mandated affordable housing.
However, the farm owner, Andy Henry, isn’t willing to give it up or sell it and is going forward with a legal challenge to have a judge decide on the use of eminent domain.
Meanwhile, the Cranbury Housing Association, which specializes in creating affordable housing, doesn’t believe the farm is a good location for any housing.
Mainly because the site is zoned for light industrial use and sits surrounded by warehouses.
“Our plan has always been the same, multiple sites throughout the town. That’s what we’ve done for the last 35 years," says Mark Berkowsky, president of the CHA.
Berkowsky says his plan would include creating seven group homes, equaling 28 units.
He also wants to take on market rate multifamily homes and use them as affordable housing.
The mayor or Cranbury has said the township council has exhausted all options before presenting our final plan and using eminent domain.
The farm has been in the Henry family since 1850.
