Residents of a high-rise building in a Morrisania neighborhood say they have broken lobby doors and other deteriorating conditions that have made them fearful for their safety.
Jennifer Sledge, a decades long resident of the building, says the doors have been broken for as long as she can remember.
Anyone can pull on the lobby door and gain access to the building
“Everything is opened up. I don’t even know who lives here anymore because it’s just so many people in and out,” said Sledge.
Sledge, who blames building management for the issues, said that when concerns are raised, they’re often ignored.
“When you bring something up, they say, ‘Yeah, we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it,’ and nothing gets done,” she added.
One of the long-standing problems in the building, Sledge says, is the broken elevator.
One elevator has been out of order for three years, causing long wait times for the 17 floors’ worth of residents.
The situation has created additional challenges for Sledge’s son, who uses a wheelchair.
"Sometimes I press the up button just so I could take the ride up, in case it’s crowded, and then take it all the way back down," said Courtney Sledge, her son.
Residents also say they are greeted by the foul odor of garbage as soon as they step off the elevator.
"I use my expensive sprays to spray my hallway because you can’t stand the stench, and it comes into your apartment,” Jennifer Sledge said, adding that the smell seems to be coming from the compactor room, even with the door closed.
Tenants say they are documenting their ongoing pleas for help and hope to build a case against Karan Singh, the building’s owner, who was fined $10 million last month for unsafe conditions at a separate property in Belmont.
