Closing arguments are finishing today in the murder trial of Paul Caneiro.
Prosecutors say Caneiro is accused of killing his brother Keith, Keith’s wife Jennifer and their children Jesse and Sophia in 2018. Assistant Prosecutor Chris Decker continued his closing remarks, telling jurors why he believes Caneiro committed the killings.
Decker showed jurors the barrel of a gun recovered in Caneiro’s backpack, along with credit cards and his passport left in a Porsche Cayenne. He said the backpack being placed in the other Porsche, not the Macan driven to Keith’s house, shows Caneiro did not expect the Cayenne to be searched.
Jurors were also shown video of a shadowy figure on Keith’s camera outside the garage door, which Decker said was wearing gloves similar to ones found in a pile. As for a motive, Decker compared the situation to a “house of cards,” saying Keith had grown alarmed about missing money from a trust account and had ordered Caneiro the night before the murders to give him access.
Decker reminded jurors that the case is built on a combination of evidence. Once closing arguments finish, the judge will charge the jury, and deliberations will begin on more than a dozen charges Caneiro faces.
