A NYPD officer is fighting for his life in the hospital after police said he was attacked and robbed early Saturday morning in Westchester Square.
Officials said the 27-year-old officer was on his way home from working the second shift when two men punched and kicked him to the ground. They held a knife to his throat and then stole the officer’s wallet, phone and his gun.
Surveillance video showed the off-duty officer walking past a supermarket just after 4 a.m.
Minutes later, another officer shined a flashlight while canvassing the area.
Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry says Taveon Hargrove is wanted in connection to the attack. The other alleged attacker had yet to be identified as of Sunday night.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and was in critical condition as of Sunday night.
Gazi Hasan, a family member, told News 12 that loved ones are shocked and traumatized.
Hasan said the victim is a rookie officer who was only on the force for about eight months.
The victim is a member of the NYPD’s Muslim Officers Society and a former dispatcher.
“It’s really sad,” Hasan said. “We saw him [Saturday] in the hospital. I think they are under observation, maybe they will need some surgery. The left eye was totally... He can’t open it totally. I think it’s [swollen]. There’s some blood [on the officer’s face].”
Police are asking anyone with information to give them a call.
