Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear hoodies, ride horses and help police track down offenders.
On Saturday morning, Riverside police were contacted by a resident of Middleton Street who reported hearing a loud crash outside her home. When she went outside, the caller found that a parked car had been hit by another vehicle that then sped off. She was unable to get any details about the car that fled the scene.
Enter "PJ" and his horse "Shiny." According to Riverside police, PJ and his equine sidekick were in the area and had witnessed the crash.
"He told her that he saw a grey Honda Accord crash into the parked vehicle and drive off," police said in a statement. "With the help of his horse, nicknamed Shiny, PJ was able to ride after the vehicle and get close enough to obtain a partial license plate number, which he passed on to police."
Saddled with this new information, police were able to identify 22-year-old Italo Lalvay Guaillasaca as the suspect in the hit-and-run. He was reigned in, placed under arrest and charged with careless driving, driving without a license, failure to report an accident and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.
PJ told officers he was just visiting Riverside - a small town in Burlington County - to show his horse to friends.
"We want to thank the witnesses in this case for being observant, coming forward, and making the calls to our officers," Riverside police said. "We’d especially like to thank PJ and his sidekick Shiny for their efforts to get us the information that ultimately solved the case."
