Captain, 3 officers wounded during attack on Rikers Island
A captain and three officers were wounded after a person assaulted multiple uniformed staff members Saturday on Rikers Island, according to the New York City Department of Corrections.
Officials say it happened at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center just before 12:30 p.m.
The captain and officers were injured while attempting to control the situation, according to a DOC spokesperson.
Paramedics rushed the four victims to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital. Their current conditions are unknown.
DOC Commissioner Stanley Richards released the following statement.
“Our staff perform a difficult and honorable job to keep our city safe. We will never tolerate any act of violence in our jails. We will support our members of service in their recovery and will pursue accountability on their behalf.”
